Yamamoto (山元町 Yamamoto-chō ) is a town located in Watari District, Miyagi, Japan.
As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 17,944 and a population density of 278.29 persons per km². The total area is 64.48 km².
Yamamoto is reported to have been devastated by the 8.9 – 9.0 MW megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on 11 March 2011 and resultant tsunami.[1] Eyewitness accounts describe Yamamoto as "one of the worst-hit areas" with no houses left undamaged.[2]
